Need to know my Mercury year model but serila number is unreadable

I am new to the board and need some help. I recently acquired a Mako 211 and it is equipped with a 225hp offshore model. I can't read the first three digits of the serial number on the tag so I can't go that route to figure out what year model the outboard is. I do know that Mercury only made these in the early eighties and then again around 1994. The boat was listed as a 1993 so I am hoping that it is a 1994 model outboard. I can tell you that it has "computerized ignition" according to the cowling and it also has an alternator as opposed to a stator on the engine if that helps.

The motor serial# should be stamped on a welch plug on the block also. Should be silver an the size of a Quarter or larger.

Thanks for the info. I found the stamping on the block just like you said and I now have two new coils ordered and on the way.
