Matty;

If you don't have the parts and service manual, here they are:

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/4858.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-858895

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/FourStroke/858895r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

I had the same problem, did you find out if we could use Yamaha parts??
The engines look identical.

Thanks,

What problems lead you to believe the rectifier was faulty?
I ask because I assumed my 2004 was also faulty due to very high voltage output (approx 20 volts) and tachometer not working. I have reviewed the manual which indictes these voltages are normal...contrary to any other engine I have had which has a output voltasge of 14.5.

Can anyone confirm if the expected rectifier/regulator output voltage of 18++ is correct for these units.

Thanks PK

804278A12 RECTIFIER/REGULAT (MERCURY) $429.93 1

That is some scary price!
No way would I fork over that kind of money for something that should cost a fraction of that. I'd try to make it work with maybe these:

Merc has a huge problem with volt reg's I see one or two a week that have almost started engines on fire, this has been going on since the early 90's I'm surprised someone hasn't got killed. The whole dam lot should have been recalled!.:mad:
