When attempting to trim my motor up I can hear all of the hydraulic pumps working but motor will not go up. Down is not a problem. I can put a small amount of pressure on the motor and it will go up but only if I put pressure on it. There is plenty of oil in the trim reservoir. No oil is leaking from anywhere on the trim system.

what horsepower? that is a common and simple problem on 50HP. mercury will sell you the parts for $150 but there is no guarantee that problem will stay away. In fact, the problem is quite likely to come back in a few years. It is still the same system and the problem is still common. The real problem on 50HP is that the internal bypass springs are designed for a universal 25-50HP setting. A strong running or heavy use 50Hp is too much and overpowers the springs. Putting in the new mercury stuff will reset your engine but not solve the problem. What you really need is to increase the spring strength and shift the internal pressure settings to a 40-60HP window. At any rate, if yours is a 50Hp then it is the trim bypass circuit. It takes about 30 minutes and $10 in parts to fix it right. It takes about 20minutes and $150 in parts to put in a new mercury trim bypass. In this instance, the cheaper fix is the better one.

Sorry, it is actually a 200hp. Don't know if the problem is the same with this size motor. Thanks for the reply.

well, per generic mercury/oildyne hydralics

check your manual release valve. it should have three orings and a knobby little tip. If that is good then .....

if you lift to end of trim pistons but don't have the juice to lift tilt ram then it is probably a pesssure problem from pump. The trim rams need very little PSI to lift a dry engine. The tilt ram needs a lot of PSI. when pumps first go out they usually have a drop in PSI. Often trim lifts and holds but tilt does not.

If the system does not lift at all then the question is if it holds. Once you lift it, does it hold or drift down? If it holds then pump probably pump. Piston failures usually aren't spring loaded and bleed off from any angle. If the system simply does not lift and hold any angle under any circumstance then it could be a blown seal anywhere in any piston or pump.
