1960 mercury 400 shift shaft alignment

Hello I have a merc 400 I put a impelleer in it and didn't get the shift shaft aligned can someone help.

Can you explain a bit better, the lower and upper shift shaft are splined and should slide together. Don't understand the problem you are having.

Wright where you sepporate them there is this little round deal that kind of stages upward and allows them to lock together it fell off when I put the new impeller in when I started it netral was drive and couldn't get it in neutral. but fefore I did this it was fine

after looking at the pictures its called the cam the shift rod goes in one end of it. it fell off when i put the new impeller
in and I didn't get it back in the right spot so now the shifter is in a diff algnment

Your engine should have the two piece metal cams which fit together. The lower cam is installed with the tangs lined up with the left front stud when the LU is in Fwd gear and then you mate the upper cam to it before installing the LU.

Due to the age of your engine and the quality of the previous manual I sent you, here is a link to a different 4 cylinder engine using the same cam setup. Scroll down to Fig, M12-63 for a good view of the lower cam and it's alignment to the left front stud.

Remember, the LU must be in Forward gear when you align the lower cam.
