I recently bought a restored (mostly) GK-7H Hurricane outboard. I've notice that some of the thread on it are fine (1/4-28 UNF) and some are coarse (1/4-20 UNC). What did the original motor mostly use?

Old Mercs were quite fond of fine threads. Most of the studded items are coarse thread where they run into the casting, with fine on the nutted end. Some screws are going to be fine thread (recoil screws come to mind) while others may be coarse (head cover bolts, exhaust and intake cover bolts), etc. So, the bottom line is, remember what came out of where...

Be sure to keep an eye on the gearcase cone, which is REVERSE thread. You can make a fitting out of a threads T-pipe fitting and a length of pipe for leverage. The T-fitting should be just large enough to go over the cone. Drill holes 180-degrees opposite for the hardened pins that can slide into the holes in the cone for engagement...
