Hey folks,

I've got a very strange issue that I'm only guessing at the issue, but would like to see if anyone else has encountered this problem.

I own a 2005 Mercury 4 stroke 40 hp. Every time I take it out, I can start the motor and get to where I'm going without any problems. However, when I leave my first fishing spot, the motor starts just fine, but when I try to accelerate the motor spits and sputters and the tachometer bounces between 1500 rpm and 2500 rpm and doesn't get any better even with the throttle all the way down.

What's strange, if I take the hood off for 5 minutes and restart, the motor works absolutely fine. If I put the hood back on, the problem occurs again. If I leave the hood off all day, the motor works fine for the rest of the day.

At first I thought the hood was pushing on something, but now I'm thinking it's an air intake issue. I have considered drilling some holes in the hood to see if it will help.

1) Has anyone else encountered this issue specific to Mercury 4 strokes?
2) Were you able to determine specifically what the cause was?
3) What did you do to permanently correct this problem?
