Not sure what type of carb you have but I have 1969 50hp and had the same issue. I am in the process of rebuilding also, but noticed when I was removing the carb from the motor that the top cover for the filter where the fuel comes in had a bit of movement. My guess is that the fuel leaked from there. But after cleaning and rebuilding, you should rebuild the carb.
