Do I need a trim/tilt motor position sender (sensor) on 1996 150hp Mercury Offshore?

I am having problems with my trim/tilt motor. First identified when I was trying to put the engine up. I hear the solenoid clicking when I hit the up/down switch. I'm almost positive the motor is bad, but not sure because the motor works intermittently. It sounds week, but get the engine up. Any recommendations/pointers for replacing the motor? It's a 3 ram system with 2 wires coming out.

Also, when I was up under the motor I noticed the trim postion sender (sensor) (still not sure what this is called) is heavily corroded and the gasget is practically non-existent. DO I NEED THIS PART TO OPERATE MOTOR? Can I just take it out? Or bypass? It seems pointless to replace since it'll be ruined again after all the fishing I'll be doing in saltwater.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks.
