I have a 1994 Mercury XR6 Serial # 0G043008 that needs a lower unit replaced. I'm bit confused after going to various websires for a replacement unit. I believe my unit as a 20" shaft but the websites are listing 2 gear ratios 1.87 vs 2.0 how do i tell which ratio I currently have? I currently run a mercury high 5 prop 23 pitch on my boat which turns 5400 rpm at wot. Which is better a replacement? A remanufactured lower unit with 1 year warrenty at $1695.00 or a aftermarket lower unit with a 3 year warrenty at $935.00. Why would a rebuilt unit cost more & and have less warrenty vs a aftermarket unit with 3 yrs warrenty ?

If it is the original lower unit it is a 1.78 ratio and 4.25" diameter housing and SEI does not offer a direct replacement for this, that is why the reman is $1695 and a 1 year warranty. You can replace it with large housing SEI as these are on the stock motors in 1:87 ratio but you may need a blowout ring from a shooter prop to use your prop.

Fazt, Can he buy a std V6 prop with the 4-3/4" prop hub and use the SEI replacement unit? I didn't realize that Merc still made the skinny gearcase for the V6 motors as late as '94. I thought it was D/C in the late 80s.
