I had bare wires showing from stator and trigger so I removed the flywheel and replaced both of the parts. at some point i rotated the engine when I put the flywheel back on the problem is I can not find a mark on the engine or pointer. I have the engine at TDC #1 piston on compression stroke now all I need to do is put the flywheel on in the correct spot but I cannot find a mark or pointer I have the Mercury service manual and it is no help.

It is Manual pull start flywheel the marks are on the flywheel but not on the engine

Ser # 6010942 I am not sure what year I was told 82. but the recoil is from a 78 confused
50 Hp thunderbolt ignition blue label

Mercury service Manual 90-86135--5 1-593
its a white book whith a picture of waves and says its Mercury/Mariner 45/50/60/70
I went to dealer in town and this is the Manual they sold me
I would rather have a Manual that is for my exact model

the problem is the flywheel is off and the #1 piston is at TDC compression stroke
but there is no marks on engine to show where to line up the fly wheel there is no indicator to use a timing to ajust timing I'm at a loss

That is the right manual but I am not in my shop right now.

It is a 1982 engine:

50 50 Classic 4-cyl 5949386 6275322 1982 USA

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...Mercury2takt4cyl4085hp/tabid/487/Default.aspx

It is a model 1050220

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/275.cfm

It looks like you have everything set up and you should be able to see an arrow on the small driven belt pulley to line up with the flywheel.

Here is a link to the Clymer manual and if you look at the picture M12-34 on page 275, you will see what I mean. Also read Merc 500 in the middle paragraph on page 280.

Let the page load for 30/40 seconds and copy to your computer as the link is short lived.

Hope this helps.

Well it turns out that there is a a v grove on the starter recoil so i lined up TDC 0 degrees on the flywheel with that. however the info about the motor year and model you sent did not match up so i am still not sure what I have

What is not matching up? I just checked all against your s/n again and those parts and manuals are for that s/n.

I suggest replacing those blue inlets too .. if you removed them, you'll NEVER get them to reseal. Over time they lose their shape, the outer ring will no longer push into the seal hard enough. I fooled with mine for 2 weeks before spending $6 for new ones.
