We were out on the boat todayand the boat was running fine for the first 30 min. We then brought it back to neutral and when we did, it came out of drive hard. At this time the motor began to rev on its own. We shut the motor down, and when we went to restart it again we found it would not start. We did some checking and found the dash was out. We found that when wiggling the wires on the right side of the motor the dash came back on. We got the boat to start again, but it would rev up to 2000 rpm on its own and the motor was missing. Before we took it out on the water we hooked it up to the garden hose and ran it to try to set the rpm before we realized that it had to be done in the water. We also found that the timing was at 12 degress. We brough it back to two degrees. We would like some help trying to figure out why it is missing and revving up on its own.

Re: 1993 mercury 75 hp

lets try a little more info.. we replaced both the drive and throttle cable and thought we should do some fine tunning prior to the begin of the boating season.. so, after the new cables we checked compression, which was fine. set idle and timing (700 rpm and timing @ 2).. Our power loss i believe was caused by the main plug going to motor (not sure how many pole but believe it was around 6 or 7 as i'm not at the boat now).. Our main question is what could be causing the high idle? just looking for a starting point... Possibly choke sticking? Just to add.. motor was also coughing at higher rpms after we had the high rpm at idle issue
