Hello - I have a 7.5 Mercury dated around the mid 80's. I have a leak in the lower unit and it looks like it's coming thru the prop
shaft. My question is, do I have to remove the prop shaft to replace the prop seal. I have removed the prop and I don't see how
the shaft comes off. Before I go any further, I wanted to see if I even have to remove the shaft. Any help is much appreciated.

Thanks

Re: Mercury 7.5 Lower Unit Leak

What is your engine s/n? Here is a link to a mid '80s prop shaft assy and if you see item 65 which is a cover nut, this will have to be unscrewed first before pulling the bearing carrier.

But what makes you think it is the prop seal? Have you first tried replacing the very inexpensive seals, items 37/39 on the Fill/Drain plugs?

Your right. I should probably change those two seals first. Easy and inexpensive. I'll let you know if that solves the problem. Thanks
for the info and the link.
