1983 50 hp Merc wont shut off with key

I rebuilt the inside of my boat this winter then after getting it done pulled it out and fired it up ran great but when I went to shut it off with the key it wouldn't shut off, everything was fine with it when I parked it and I keep it covered all the time just wondering if anyone could help with where to start looking?

Sounds like your shorting wire has a break in it somewhere. Have you opened up the control box at all?

not yet I did have the wire harness looped out of the bout when I was rebiulding the back and installing new carpet I will start by checking it out to see if I did something there and check all the wires
