Hi all, new to the forum...
I recently purchased a 1993 short shaft Tiller Mariner 9.9.
I immediatley changed the lower unit oil.. I ran it last Sat. & Sun.. water pumped great no issues, good compression.. My friend told me to check the lower unit oil again today to see if I had water in it.. he said if it was leaking that after time the water will seperate from the oil... sure enough there was about 1 oz of water that drained outta the lu. Lower unit oil was not milky though. Can you all give me advice on how to fix and what parts are needed? I am mechanically inclined and don't have the $$$ to take to the mechanic. Thanks Sam

Sam. When you changed the lowerend oil, did you install NEW fiber washers on the drain and vent screws? Also did you make sure that old or some other washers where not stuck on the lowerend? many times you have to use a pick to get the old washers off the lowerend.

Like you friend said the water will seperate and be on the bottom if left long enough. So it won't be milky.

Sam;

Here is the parts listing for your engine:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/496.cfm

Here is the service manual:

http://1manual.com/Mercury manuals/Service Manual PDFs/TwoStroke/827242r1/cover.pdf

You must have Adobe Acrobat reader installed to use this manual. If you scroll down to the lower part of the opening page, you will see the various engine components in red. Click on the one you want and when the first page opens, click on the "Save As" icon at the top LH corner of the page and you can save it to your computer.

The seals to try first as Mi Duckdown said are items 4 and 9 under GEAR HSG (DRIVE SHAFT)
