1967 6 hp mercury outboard

I removed the foot, inspected ,changed impeller , the shift rod was rusted badly , cleaned shaft, housing etc. my question there is a hole in the saddle where the foot bolt is,and when looking in the shifter housing hole you can see that water can go from the hole to the shift shaft housing hole. the hole looks machine made . does water stay in the shift shaft housing

That whole midsection is the water/air exhaust tube. If you are talking about the midsection, I have the same hole in my 77 4.5 horse. Just let the water leak out, and make sure that your shift shaft oil seal is in tact. Got any pics?

Foot? Marine drives don't have feet. There is an upper and a lower.
