1989 45hp what is this screw hole for in the head?

new acquired motor, 1989, classic fifty 45hp. there is this threaded hole in the head, next to number one. what is this hole for? do i need to seal or plug it?

Looks like it is the attachment for the temp switch, item 36 in this link:

WOW 170.00 for a temp sensor???? looks like i will not have a temp probe. guess its for the overheat alarm?

my guess is it is ok to run with out the stupid sensor.
