i need to replace lower unit on 1978 merc 115 will other year or hp models work ?

Sure, That motor has a 2::1 gear ratio. Any inline six gearcase from the early 70 to the late 80s will fit, and have the right gear ratio. Inline 4 gearcases from 85HP models will fit, but some have other gear ratios.

Where are you located? I have a gearcase from a '77 merc 1500, that will fit
