Cruise RPM setting?

Was curious what a good long term planing cruise setting would be for a 40hp 4 stroke. WOT is about 6,100 RPM. My motor is a bit anemic for the hull, but does just fine once out of the hole on a plane. I tested it with 600lbs of people and it would cruise nicely about 4500rpm. Im used to being gentle on motors - can these be run at WOT long term or is that only for short bursts? Good cruise RPM?

Re: Cruise RPM setting?

If your on plane and motor isnt screaming/crying at 4500 your fine.My WOT is 5500 and i cruise on plane between 3000 - 4000.
So many factors like weight,HP,trim, prop etc.

3000-3500 is the sweet spot...any more and the fuel consumption goes way up and not much more speed is gained...
