Hi

I am about to purchase a 2002 Mercury XR6 150hp. I need to know what the compression should be on all cyl?

Do you need to pull the Kill switch to ground out all spark first? What is the correct procedure?

Is there and hour meter on these motors?

Seller says you need to change thermastats on the motor every year? Why?

ThankYou

Re: 2002 Mercury 150Hp xr6 Compression and overall reliability of outboard

Hey, Jim.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Go to the Engine FAQs forum ^^^ and do the compression test by the instructions there. Post your results here.

What to look out for is one or two cylinders that compress more than 10% below the rest. If all 6 are within a 10% span the engine is probably healthy mechanically.

Good luck. :)

From Mercury Service manual
COMPRESSION
All Models – Using a fully charged battery, throttle shutters wide open
and cylinder block warm
110 – 135 psi
(753.3 – 924.5 kPa)
Variance between cylinders should not
exceed 15 psi (102.7 kPa)

I know its an old post, but I was recently looking at a 2001 150 xr6. Appears to be very clean compression was 115,115,115,120,120,120 not sure if this is normal, possible indication of a bad gasket on one side vs the other or am indicator of something worse. Any input would be greatly appreciated

No. Those are good compression numbers. Like the previous post said, within 15% of the others. Your variance is less than 5% so you're good.
