I'm installing a tach and adjusting the idle on my 89 merc 50hp. What rpm range do you guys recommend when out of the water. Thanks

Re: idle speed

Idle rpm should be indicated on the tune-up label on the engine. The Manufacturers recommended wide open throttle rpm is also listed on that label.

Re: idle speed

SWAG is measured in gear on the boat moving forward: Just fast enough for the engine to remain running. On my 3 cyl 90 the book says 675 nom under those conditions. The slower you go the easier it is for the engine to die. The faster, the harder it is on the gear train when shifting. That's about it.
