Okay so just brought a boat, it worked fine for a couple of times..
Now it doesn't seem to want to go into reverse or forwards.. I don't know whats up and don't have enough money to go fix it..
Its a mercury 40 HP blue band with the mercontrol... gearbox?

First, watch the shift linkage at the engine while someone shifts the shifter for you to make sure it's moving in both directions. Next, with the key out the prop should spin free in neutral, in forward the prop should rachet(click) as you turn. In reverse it shouldn't move.
