I went out to go fishing this morning
I started the motor, idled fine started running down the lake after about a mile, running fine
then all of a sudden it starts losing speed, rpm's and dies, It was going around 5200 rpm's
the motor has never had a problem since the day I bought new, had regular mainteance
I tried to restart it and it wouldn't even turn over. I waited a few minutes tried again it started
ran extremly rough, never could get it higher than 1800 rpm all the way back the the ramp
I replaced the spark plugs, the old ones showed alittle wear but nothing out of the norm
Put the boat back in the water, started fine, I got it up to 3000 rpm but it was slow going
never could get it any better than that.
It idles fine, runs ok but it has no power it take quite awhile to get it up to 3000 rpm
not sure where to start next
Any help would greatly appreciated

it could be worth getting the injectors cleaned and replace all the fuel filters.

Reading around, blocked injectors seem to be a common problem on these
motors and also the Yamaha,

i did read one post that said the methanol in gas was
washing the copper out of brass fittings and causing the fittings to sinter
so the owner was finding tiny gold coloured particles in the fuel system.

The partials also found their way into the injectors and caused loss of power by
blocking the fine screens. Contact a specialist injector mechanic, a Mercury dealer
will just fit new ones. Mind you if your budget allows then new ones can't hurt
and you can then get the old ones fixed and keep them as spares.

might be worth checking thoroughly all the filters, lines etc for any gold dust :)

Is it a EFI or DFI?? From what you posted it sounds like motor locked down from a mechanical or cooling failure or if a DFI the air compressor took a dump. Injectors do not suddenly stop up and they will not keep the engine from turning over.

Re: Mercury 225 HP 2003 Loos of power

It is DFI

Thank you for the information

I got it home and hook it up to a hose and it idle just fine, I really couldn't find anything obvious
so I took it back to the lake, It started fine but when I give it gas it started to bogg down
but it eventually got the rpm up enough to get on plane and the rpm made it up to 4800
It doesn't sputter or cut out, it just doesn't get up and go like it did
So I figure tomorrow I will change the fuel filters and the fuel pump and see if that helps

These engines are bad about breaking reeds and they will still idle great. Start on hose and listen for a "huffing" noise from throttle body. Could of broken a reed and took out a cylinder.

Re: Mercury 225 HP 2003 Loos of power

Finally got a look at the cylinders with a camera a friend had
I had 2 reeds broke and damaged cyclinder 1 and 4
Now come the fun stuff fixing and paying for it

Thanks for everybody input

bascically the reeds broke if I had stop there I could have probably saved further damaged
lesson learned the hard way

When repairing it replace the reed with the Merc carbon fiber ones or a aftermarket reed,do not use Boyesen reeed as they wont last long...
