2003 Mercury 150 XR6 idle

I went out Wednesday on a friends boat, it idled rough seem to me firing issue? I ran it and watched the tach around 2800 to 3000 rpm;s it starts running great hit's all cylinders I could tell a big difference. It's almost like it's running on 4 or 5 cylinders at idle? Compression fine gas lines all good. I think it's a switchbox issue? Any ideas? when it hits 2800 rpm's jumps right on plane and run's great. He's used to it and suspected something was wrong but never addressed the issue. Drove me crazy.........

Two routes to a fix.
1. Throw parts at it and hope you don't introduce another problem or go broke.
2. Get a DVA, some charts (CDI ignition troubleshooting guide for instance) and find the failing part. If more than one copy of the same part on the engine, swap to move the fault and prove the part is bad.

It was varying about 300 rpm's at idle. I'll get it from him and do what J Martin suggested. We'll see what happens, will let everyone know. Thanks for the replies as always.
