As long as you didn't pull the shiftshaft out of the cam in the LU this should work : Turn the LU shift shaft by hand counter-clockwise until it
stops, then with Vise Grips tight on the bottom of the shaft turn it a
few more degrees CCW until it clicks into a stop, this
should be neutral - check by turning propshaft --
do not shift into reverse unless you turn the propshaft at the same time.
If it is in N go ahead and attach LU to driveshaft housing with control in N.

Your s/n from a previous post comes up as a 1961.

Merc 700 Gear Shift 70 1413611 thru 1436114 1961

Here is the condensed version of the service manual:

Not too sure what you mean by "and now my cams wont lay together when it is in neutral". Are you talking about the reverse lock cams which fit on the shift shaft? How do you mean they won't lay flat together. When they are assembled the ears on the upper cam fit into the valley on the lower cam.

Alright so I finally got it. I think. I just went ahead I put it together and seems to shift fine now. We will get a real test when it warms up.
