hello new to this forum and a novice when it come to boat motors , got a 850 mercury 1970s to mid 1976 model that isn't charging . do these motors have alternators ?? or do the starter charge. I see that my starter has a gear that looks to fit around the flywheel. I also forgot to mention that it does run but seems to kill my batteries? Any help would be great as i am trying to save money like most are these hard times.

Thanks.

You're gonna need a wiring diagramwiring diagram.jpg here it is.
The stator is under the flywheel, check the wires that lead to the rectifier for bad insulation and breaks. Disconnect the wires from the rectifier and check with an ohmmeter should be around .25 to .35 Ohms.
rectifier-testing.jpg Here's how you test the rectifier.
Also check the red lead from rec. to Positive battery.

Can't see the attachments, try putting them inline with the message.
Follow the two yellow wires from the stator (under flywheel).

Re: Mercury 850 1970-1976's Model Charge problem

I tried using the multi meter on battery while running the motor . i saw volts go from 12 to 12.5 to 13 and 14 volt. would this indicate that the battery is being charged ?
