Thanks for any insight!

I'm looking at two boats and about to buy one of them. The first, the one I am more interested in has a 1994 Mercury 115 hp 4.2. The owner told me that this motor idles on two cyclinders then 'hesitates for a split second' and powers up to four cyclinders when you need the power. It ran great with muffs on and the boat looked very well cared for with the exception of cracking vinyl seats from sitting in the sun after bleaching them.

1994 starcraft 1700115 Merc with upgraded trailer. $2500

The other boat I'm looking at is a

1993 larson 1700 with 130 Yamaha motor. Spotless interior, but has some soft spots on the floor. $3200

Assuming both boats were cared for equally what would you preffer. Is there anything noteable about a Merc 115 vs a Yamaha 130.

What about a larson vs a starcraft.

Soft spots on the floor? Probable wood rot and will need replacement.

Is the Starcraft aluminum?

No contest.

The slight hesitation on acceleration of the 115 2 + 2 is minor adjustment to perfect the carbs, accelerator pump, and timing linkages.

You will need to follow the detailed instructions in the factory manual, should be available at one of these links.

No they are both fiberglass 17 ft boats.

The larson weighs 1150, the starcraft weighs 1350 without motors or fuel.

The starcraft was a surprisingly big tall, deep 17 foot boat. The trailer was heavy duty also looked like it could handle a way heavier boat too.

So are you saying the starcraft with the merc is what you'd go for no question. The floor was solid, and the motor looked and sounded real good. Only thing it needed was a lot of new vinyal which is not that big of a deal.

I want to look at the larson with the yamaha tonight.

I'm kind of leaning towards the larson as it is a lighter boat/trailer and my outback wagon is rated at 2500lbs for towing.

Yep, don't buy more than you can tow. :) My pref would be the merc though. Owned one and never had issues with it at all.
