replacing poppet valve on 1989 mariner 115 hp

I'm going to replace the t-stat on the outboard and figured i would replace the poppet while i'm at it replacing the gasket under the same cover. I have the poppet and awaiting for the diaphram and spring to come in, do i need to replace the black cup shaped piece as well?

i just checked the repair part list off my serial # and the cup piece they are referring to is called a washer ?, looks like a very thick round piece shaped like a toilet paper roll if you cut it in half width wise,
