1972 Mercury Marine 200 (20 HP) Throttle Problem

I was wondering if anyone could help me troubleshoot a problem I'm having with my 72 Mercury 200 20 horsepower boat. It is not going "full speed" when I push the throttle down all the way. I can manually make it go faster by moving the linkage above the carb in the motor, but the throttle on the MerControl is not making it go fast, just putting it in forward and then the boat goes slowly (basically idle speed). I have taken apart the MerControl unit and greased everything. The boat was my dad's, and he said he used to have to slam the throttle down hard to make it go fast, but now that doesn't work.

Any suggestions?

Does the throttle cable move at the motor when you move the control lever. If not then the control or the cable is defective.

Thank you for your reply. The gears/levers move in the motor when I push the throttle down, but I haven't paid much attention to the actual cable. I will try it again tomorrow and let you know.
