mercury 135hp v6. 1988. starter clicking.. starter bad? or solenoid?

i have a 1988 mercury 135hp v6. the starter is clicking.. when i tap it with a wrench sometimes it works, sometimes it doesnt. is the starter bad? or the solenoid? help please. dont wanna buy a new starter and find out its the solenoid.. thanks

Jump the starter direct with a Jump-pack a few times to see if the starter engages. If it does the starter is good. By what you said it sounds like the starter. Clean all connections on the starter, solenoid, and battery.

all the connections are clean.. i just put the motor back together after a rebuild.. and i just replaced the cable hookups on the battery.. so everything is clean

Do what sunfish says. It's diagnostics, not guessing.
