Greetings everyone!

I'm closer to 40 than 30 & I only now just recently bought my very first boat, so in advance I ask for your patience. Before posting, I looked back several pages, viewing various posts, searching for topics that I thought may address my problem, but to be honest, I wouldn't know what I was looking for even if it was in front of my face.

I bought a 1963 Glasspar Seafair Phaeton ( Cannot verify year as I am unable to find the HIN anywhere. I have not registered the boat yet. )

The guy I bought the boat from told me upfront that he did not know the year of the motor. The motor ran prior to me taking it home. Now it wont start. It'll turn over, but there is no spark @ the plugs. Looking under the cover, it was obvious that the wiring is the original. Most of the wiring insulation has rotted off, & as a result, there is a lot of green corrosion over most of the wiring. The problem I am having, is that I am unable to verify exactly what type/year of motor I have so I am unable to look for replacement parts to see if the motor is even salvageable, which is where I hope someone here will be able to help me. I have been told that this particfular motor was a very good motor & if possible, was advisable to repair ir, rather than buying a new motor entirely.

What I know about the motor: ( Hahaha.. rather limited I admit )
1) 2 Stroke In-line 6Cyl. Mercury Outboard w/3 Carbs. - I was told this is a 115HP motor, but very few shops locally (I live in Ca.) will look at old 2-strokes, due I was told, to lack of parts. There is no ID Plate/Stamp on the motor with the engine model or serial number, except for "Serial#3943500" Stamped on the block itself & on the part that clamps to the Transom, but when I Googled that serial number, I got zero hits on any of the parts sites I searched. I spent some time looking at motors for sale on eBay & saw what looked like an exact visual match, which was a 1972 model.

I took several pictures of the motor with hopes that they may help ID what I have:

I was advised to replace the water pump impeller, which I have not done yet. So I have not looked inside the engine to see if there is any rust. I do have those water muffs & used them when I turned over the motor. I added the correct ratio of oil-to-fuel into the tank. I called a local salvage yard today & the guy I talked to, advised that I replace the Powerpack before replacing the coil, since the coil would cause an intermittent spark, rather than no spark at all which is the problem I am having. Is this correct?

Thank you all very much in advance!

That serial number comes up as a 1974 stack 6 merc 115. hope that helps.
The stack 6 merc was a awesome motor with tons of power definintely worth spending the money fix rather than replace.

Looks like a clean motor.
My advise. Purchase An OEM MERCURY Service manual.
You will not regret it. I will answer SOOO many Questions.
Not that we won't help you.
But reading that manual is a font of info.

nxgncav02 & Mi duckdown,

You guys are awesome! Thanks so much for the reply's.

Is this the correct OEM Service Manual?

Now that I have a year to work with, I found my motor's model#. It's: 1115504.
I took a look here for parts: http://www.boats.net/parts/search/Merc/Mercury/1974/1115504/parts.html

Wow... It's gonna cost me over a grand right off the bat to replace a few key parts. Now I can see why people call boats "Money Pits" lol...

Can you recommend a good aftermarket company to buy parts from? Heck, I'm happy with used parts.. Wait.. maybe not.. I'm not keen on having to paddle back to the dock if I break down on the water..
