I got a 2001 sportcraft 220cc with a 2000 mercury 200 efi outboard(2 stroke) this summer. The boat hasn't been run in 4years and a local marine mechanic who has had the boat for the past month originial quotes me $2000 to "get it going". He claimed he needed to replace a few parts including the vapor separator which has seized. Now he tell me the engine is "junk" and mercury only made them for a few years and are nothing but trouble, he suggests I look for a new motor. Is this really the case are these engine not worth repairing or is it time to find a new mechanic?

Thanks Ian

Depend on whats wrong with itas it sounds like he dont wont to mes with it. The vapor seperater cannot sieze as its just a housing but it could be damaged by salt water. The fuel pump in VST could be sieze alow with injector problem which all can be repaired. If ts a salt water motor and has heavy salt damge I would replace it...

Have a look at this service bulletin on seized fuel pumps
