Mariner 30 hp not going into gear

I am new to this forum so please go easy on me.

I was going across the lake last weekend when my 30 hp came out of gear. After it came out it wouldn't go back into forward or reverse. Up to this point I haven't had any issues or heard anything weird from the motor. I checked the controls and shear pin. They're both good. I believe it's a linkage issues. I know it's hard to say without looking at the lower unit but does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

You may have to take off the lower unit and have a look at the linkage while shifting from neutral to forward, to reverse. If it moves, lower unit has issues, if no movement, needs linkage fixed.
