Just bought a used boat, it came with a 2003 30 hp Mercury 4 stroke, it idles fine but when accerlating it cuts out, we found that if accerlated quickly we can get the engine to higher rpms but it sputters frequently. Again when we idle down it will frequently stall. it's dangerous to jump to max speed and will be repairing the engine before going back out on the water. Going back to the seller but want more info. We have the tank vent open but this engine has a fuel pump which doesn't appear to be starved. We will check the compression today, also interested in what I should find, it was a question I had for the seller but they didn't answer the question, just said they will get back to me. Your answers are appreciated.
