Help adapting QS controls to '74 850 motor

I bought a Skeeter boat with Quicksilver controls. I have put a 1974 mercury 850 Thunderbolt on the boat. I know that I can buy an adapter to mate the wiring, but is there a way to cut the end off the wire from the controls and connect to the motor? Or make an adapter?
