If it's a 2-stroke then the proceedure is this.

1. Pump fuel bulb till hard than a little more.
2. Advance throttle only about 1/3.
3. Turn key to on and push to activate the fuel enricher for about 2 seconds.
4. Turn key to start.
5. Once it fires, release key and bring RPM's down to about 1200 until warned up.

I hope this helps.

Mine is somewhat leaner than that and sometimes it takes 30 seconds or so with additional squirts (pushing in and holding till engine recovers) while it's sputtering and coughing in coming on line. Once I have started mine, it is good to go the rest of the day and I can start it easily in N with no throttle advance (idle) with no priming (pushing in of the key) if I don't leave it off for too long and it cools down. If it does I follow Craig's comments.

On the first start of the day, one of my problems is that I don't boat that often so it takes time to get fuel to all the right places. If I boated daily, or frequently then Craig's comment would probably apply to my engine too.

You can start it with the switch pushed in....actually that's the preferable way as you are dumping fuel into the engine as the engine is trying to get enough to light off.

On the throttle setting, the 1/3 isn't a magic number....it is just a compromise between not enough fuel to light off (idlle) and so much fuel that the engine overrevs when it does and along those lines, have you hand ready to cut the throttle back as soon as it lights off...1000d to 1500 rpm's is where you want to warm it up.
