I have a 1982 115HP inline 6 mercury engine .I am changing the water pump, what lubrication should be done to the bearing under the pump, it looks like it uses motor oil .

Does anyone know any "secret" tips for the pump install , I do have a manual.

That bearing is lubricated by the gear oil in the gearcase. You do not need to do anything to lube it.

Secret tip: Clean the driveshaft with sandpaper to get off all corrosion which can easily damage new driveshaft seal. Now oil up driveshaft and pump base oring and install new pump base. I smear the driveshaft with grease to keep corrosion down. Grease driveshaft and shift shaft splines as well. Install gearcase in neutral, and only tighten nuts with finger pressure until the gearcase is completely mated. Now tighten with wrench.

thanks , I haven't tipped the case over far enough for lube to leak out of that bearing, I guess it would, sounds like I am ready to go
