1989 175 mercury black max

I just brought a used bass boat with a 1989 mercury 175 black max. It dosent get on plan easy it is sluggish. I have change fuel filter and fuel hose and bulb. it will get on plan after a while, just dosent seem to have the power it should. I just started working on problem any suggestions?

Mine did that the other day. Turns out I had 60 gallons of water in the bilge.

Actually, you need to start at the bottom.
1. Compression test to make sure you don't have major mechanical problems.
2. Spark test
3. DVA the stator (looking for bad high speed winding)
4. Fuel system complete, carb and fuel pump kits.
5. Link n sync.

What happens is that things get out of wack, and the uninformed and untrained user will tinker and adjust to get it through the day. Eventually it becomes most anchor.
