Hello from Norway !

I have a 1986 Mariner 45 hp (Belgium), 4 cyl. 2-stroke, 2 off Walbro carburetor`s.

Regarding float adjustment; Clymer Shop Manual describes float level to be 1/4 " from float bottom to casting, holding the carburetor upside down when measuring.

But, when doing this control of float level, should the float "hang free" only affected by it`s own weight, or should the float be pressed down somehow ?

Anyone who has a good description ??

Best regards A.H.

Should only be affected by its own weight with metal adjustment tab resting on float needle.you can adjust by bending metal tab on float. Good luck.

With the carb removed from the motor and held upside down the float should hang of it's own weight. NEVER push on the float as this will cause excessive pressure against the needle and seat causing this to deform and most likely fail prematurely.

Test the needle/seat seal with the carb upside down by blowing into the fuel hose fitting with your mouth. If it holds that pressure it should hold fuel.

Most small engine carbs held in this manner you will see the float very nearly parallel to the carb body, that flat surface that the bowl fits against. This gap is the space that is measured and may be adjusted by very carefully bending the tab that contacts the needle. Again, very carefully as even a very small touch can make a large difference in the float height.

Floats rarely go out of adjustment.------Often adjusted for no reason at all.---------What is the motor doing / not doing and why are carburetors apart ?
