indentification and max rpm for 150 mariner

i have a 89 mariner 150 mag or so all my paper work says. everthing is original from the original owner and the bill of sell and all the paper work says its a 150 mag. the serial no is OB117411. and most guys i talk too around here say that they cant find that serial no or that its a plain 150. i would like to know which if possible. also because of the confussion im not sure what the safe max rpms for this motor is if anybody has any ideas i would appreciate it thanks lonnie

Run the serial number up at mercury parts express, and it'll tell you what the engine is. The Mag is the same as a merc XR2, which is a 2.0 L bass boat motor made till about 1987. Then they went to the XR4, which is a 2.4 L engine. It probably wouldn't be a 1989 150 mag then, would it.

That said, the 150's like to run at about 5500 rpm. If you have the advance module on it, torque falls off so fast over 5500 you gain nothing. If it has vertical reeds and standard porting, it pretty much fades over 5500 rpm anyway.

If the SN has been altered and fails to come up with the detail at mercury, we can probably collectively figure out what it is anyway.

i checked at mecury parts express and the serial nop comes up invalid i check all the paper work and mounting b racket for the motora got the same no. and wont over taching the motor cause damagew? thanks agaoin lonnie
