Im replacing the powerhead onmy 1976 merc 200 20hp with a 1972 merc 200 20hp. swopped one powerhead for another fits fine.. however the (1976)stator assembly as well as the tigger assembly will not fit onto the 1972 powerhead. The issue is the crankcase top assembly is different. can i swop the crankcase top assemblies to make this work? Not sure how likely I can remove those without damaging the block or shaft?

Mixing and matching on those old 20s is always a crapshoot. If your '72 has the maker point ignition, it may or may not work as the crankshaft will be taller due to the cam area ground into it. Also, check that the crankshaft keyway is in the same spot on the respective cranks in relation to TDC. I am pretty sure the bearing caps themselves will swap around without too much trouble. GENTLY pry them up and out so as to not mar the mating surfaces or break off the bolt hole ears. Use a wide flat blade screwdriver on each side. Lightly grease the cap when reinstalling so as to avoid damaging the o-ring seal.
