replaceing the trim seals on my 1987 mariner 200

I have a problem with my trim slowly leaking down, I was told to remover the port side
trim rod and clean the check valve, OK the cap that the Spanner Wrench unscrews
what way do I turn it to remove it? lefty losey or right? before I go getting tough
with it i'd like to know which way to spin it.
