1983 80 hp mercury loss of power

I have a 1983 80 HP mercury that seems to have losses power put new plugs in, a new head gasket. and when I put it back together I had to mess with the idle screws on both carbs in order for it to stay running when I throttle it down it takes a while to get on plain. and I lost 10 to 15 MPH. do not have power trim and didn't. move the pin on the transom please help

OK, take a compression test and a spark test and post results.

BTW - It is doubtful that motor has a headgasket.

getting good spark, compression tes is as folloows cyliner#1 140,#2 145, #3 145, #4 140

OK, your compression is good. sounds like a case of clogged carbs.....time to clean and rebuild them.

You may also need to do a link & sync according to your manual and it must be done in the steps given.

thanks for your info i did sync the carbs and it sounds good and runs good hooked up to the garden hose i'm going to put it in the water tomorrow to test it better
