85hp mercury will run as long as i hold the key in start position

i have an 85hp mercury s/n 7010313 that will run as long as i hold the key in the start position but dies when i put it in the run position, i changed out the switcbox , i verified that i have power to the white wire on the switch . i cant figuere out why it dies out PLEASE HELP

Is that a motor with a distributor ignition? If so, that is classic case of a bad trigger. Go on the CDIElectronics.com web site and look up the troubleshooting test for your ign system

of course it is the distributor type , are they hard to remove? any pointers?

I would recommend you isolate the cause to the trigger, since they are about $200 and a bit of work to install. That website will have the isolation test for you. I also recommend a good (OEM) service manual for your motor. The distributors are a bit tricky to disassemble, and then you will need to do a link and synch.
