I have a 1968 Merc 9.8 2472530. Nice motor but it sat for awile. I got it running but it would stop after about 45 seconds, gas tank pump went soft so i thought it was a pump diaphram. the carb was clean but I blew it out and cleaned it anyway. The old pump diaphram had no cuts in it etc.. so I put a new one on anyway. Now even with 2 gaskets the darn fuel pump leaks gas on the carb side with a new gasket, thats why I tried 2, still leaks??? the pump halves looks smooth so I don't have any idea why it is leaking gas when I sqeeze the gas tank bulb even with a new gasket. Any ideas why its leaking?? (its not mounted to the block, the motor was never drilled out for that but the screw threads are there, it is the set up that has the hose running into the rear of it for the pressure) thanks for any input.

Re: 9.8 Mercury fuel pump problem

Remove one of the gaskets. You can't get a proper seal with two gaskets in the pump.
