When I tighten the cap ,at one point gets tight, then loosens. The O ring appears to be in good shape. I am docked in a salt water canal,so tip motor out of the water to avoid stuff growing on it.I plug the drains from the motor well to keep oil out of the water. It is a mess to clean up each time I go out. TOB (tired old boater)

Replace the oil tank and the oil tank cap assy. Fairly common for the mouth of the oil tank to become disfigured preventing a tight seal. You can try just a cap, but I'm willing to bet this will not solve the problem. Good luck.

For a fix to this oil leak on a Mercury Outboard 2-strokes - check out www.ebay.com and type in "Merc BUDDY" or check out www.robbco-llc.com for more details on this leaking oil tank leak. Provides an easy solution, a better way to add /check oil and a back up in case you loose your cap and dip stick in the water.
