1989 Mercury Blackmax XR4 150HP slow to start pumping water, but when it starts it a strong steady stream. How long after the motor cranks should it start to pump?

Thanks David

I'm assuming you're talking about the tell-tale stream. It's pumping water immediately, but all the water that comes out the tell-tale has to go through the thermostats first. It won't spit much till the engine is fully warmed up. That usually takes under a minute unless the supply water is real cold, and then it might never get there at idle.

hope it helps
