I have a 1997 2 stroke 25 hp merc and my electric start hasn't been working. If I turn the key I get a click sound, tried a different battery and got the same thing so it doesn't seem to be a dead battery. I tried bypassing the solenoid and running power directly to the starter and got nothing, next I wedged the key in the on position and rapped on the starter with a wood block a few times and it started up fine, turned it off and tried starting it with the key and it now works . However, does it sound like the starter is on it's way out? Last time I took it out I remember the first couple times I turned the key all I got was a click but, then it started up fine. Any suggestions?

Yes, your starter is about to give up on you.
Best thing to do is remove it and take it to your local starter/alternator repair shop and have them check it out. They can usually fix starters a lot cheaper than you can buy a new one.
