I recently bought a boat with what I believe to be a '93 40 magnum, serial
#0d195xxx. The previous owner told me that he had replaced the power trim about three years ago, but just by appearances it looks like the motor was replaced and the pump and cylinder are original. The problem is that it doesn't work. With the motor all the way down you can not lift the motor. I used the trim up control and lifted at the same time and I can raise the motor manually but as soon as I stop lifting the motor goes back down. I finally got it all the way up and put the lock on. I removed the entire unit and took the motor apart from the pump and it works in both directions from both the control button and the motor button but it has no effect on the cylinder. It is currently fully extended and I cannot push it back in. I checked the fluid in the pump and there is very little. What type of fluid does this take and how much? I also gather that I have to bleed this unit. How do I do that? If this doesn't fix the problem what should I check next?
