Mercury 25HP Shifter problem

I need help!--just tried my Mercury 25HP motor with remote start. I was able to go forward, but could not get the motor to neutral or reverse. Believe it or not the motor went forward when I put the shifter in reverse at high speed. Scary and unsafe. I have checked for "kinking in the cables" (not a problem)---I would very much appreciate some advice,

Why did it go into a gear a hi speed anyway? Did it shift properly to start with? If the motor running when your trying to shift it now? Sounds like something may have went wrong with the clutch dog in the lower unit. The lower unit is designed to shift gears at idle only, anything above that can damage the internal parts.
