it won't idle, it misses bad at low rpm, always runs at 5500 rpm, however the tac now reads 7000 but still tops out at the same speed and doesn't seem to be running any harder, and after it's warm it will only start with the choke on all the way. any ideas
thanks

Start with all the simple stuff, I would start diagnosing before replacing. Do the clear fuel line test. You won't need the meter right away.

I have had the same issues with my '80 175. My fuel line was 30 yrs old so I replaced it and the bulb. The tach reading could be a rectifier problem. Get the Merc service manual and it shows how to test everything.

The symptoms that you describe could be a bad stator or a bad rectifier/regulator. I would perform the diagnostics as per the Merc Service Manual to get to the root of the problem with the least trouble and expense.

First get you a manual(sport jet not outboard) and then check the following:
1)stator
2)rectifier
3) electric fuel pump filter
4) heat sheild on bottom carb(they break off from vibration)
5) ecu & switchboxes
